Main properties

Phenol is the simpliest of oxy-derivartive aromatic compounds. It is a colorless crystalline substance with typical odor. Phenol is a weak acid. When stored in the open air it receives pink color. Phenol is easily soluble in ethanol, methanol, diethyl ether, acetone, chlorophorm and other organic solvents. Phenol has antiseptic properties. A-grade phenol is of highly purity because it has fewer admixtures. It also has lower freezing point.

Purpose

Major quantity of phenol is processed into phenol-formaldehyde resins, polyepoxydes and polycarbonates. The main fields of use for phenol are the following:o production of bisphenol А which is parent substance for polycarbonates production; o production of phenol-formaldehyde resins; o production of caprolactam, adipinic acid, aniline, alkyl-phenols, hydroquinone; o production of many pharmaceuticals (acetylsalicylic acid, salol, phenolphthalein) etc.; o parent compound in the synthesis of several pesticides and plasticizers;
